Why We Remember

As we commemorate Workers’ Memorial Day this April 28th, it is important for us to remember those who have lost their lives or suffered injuries and illnesses due to workplace hazards. Today, we honor their memory, raise awareness about workplace safety, and strive for continuous improvement in this crucial area.

In an recent article by Kathleen Rest, the importance of Workers Memorial Day was explained along with a call to action for improving worker safety and health (full article available: https://jordanbarab.com/confinedspace/2023/04/25/workers-memorial-day-2023/). The article highlighted the ongoing challenges in occupational safety and health, emphasizing the need for stronger regulations and more effective enforcement. Also, the need for more active involvement of employers, employees, and stakeholders in fostering safer working conditions.

Call to Action

To help achieve these goals, it is crucial for business leaders and Environmental, Health, and Safety teams to stay informed and engaged in their industry’s emerging hazards and best practices. Some practices include:

  1. Conducting regular workplace hazard evaluations and involving multiple stakeholders across the organization (e.g., workers, EHS, management).
  2. Developing a policy and procedure for regularly reviewing and updating safety protocols and guidelines to ensure they meet or exceed industry standards.
  3. Implementing comprehensive training programs to educate employees about potential hazards and the steps they can take to prevent incidents. OSHA provides numerous resources on improving hazard communications and best practices to ensure compliance.
  4. Encouraging open communication between employees and management regarding safety concerns, and fostering a culture of safety. Again, highlighting the importance of stakeholder engagement and having workers actively involved in workplace initiatives and committees.
  5. Actively collaborating with regulatory agencies and industry partners to share best practices and advocate for policy changes that improve workplace safety.

As we reflect on Workers’ Memorial Day, let us renew our commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of our workforce. Together, we can create safer work environments that not only protect lives but also contribute to the long-term success and sustainability of our businesses.
